France is the reigning champion, having won the 2018 tournament in Russia.


This will be the first time that a country from the Middle East will host the FIFA World Cup, making it the first time the event will be held outside the usual June-July timeframe for the quadrennial event. This is done to avoid the heat of the Qatari desert in summer.


Eight stadiums in Qatar will be used as the 64 venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In the opening match, the host Qataris will face Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The match will kick off at 9.30 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST).
